Our Intent

A love of learning

We want to be able to remember more, know more and learn more, this means children developing their knowledge and skills within our curriculum and their own personal interests, but also adults developing their practice, learning from one another and sharing wisdom with the children we are lucky enough to work with. As part of this we are becoming more resourceful, being able to adapt - using what we have available to us - to become successful and ensure that we are continuously present, giving everything our total effort.

A love of our environment

In our community, want to instil a love and respect about our environment, whether this be our school environment, the local area or global, physical or environmental. Not only do we care about our environment but we want to ensure we have the knowledge and capabilities to not only identify, research and understand issues but to help do something about them. We are lucky enough to attend school in a wonderful environment each day, and we want to ensure that we appreciate, respect and maintain that.

Prepared for the future

Our future is ever-changing, for children and adults. This is why we see it as essential that we develop into: independent people who are capable of thinking and acting for ourselves, philosophical learners who are able to absorb information and reach educated conclusions, confident humans that can use these characteristics to make a positive difference in their own, and other peoples, lives; ensuring there is hope for the future.

Computing

At Edenham CofE Primary School we instil positive attitudes towards computing and modern technology, by educating them about the technology in the world today and how to use this safely they will develop a love of computing. By introducing our youngest children to aspects of programming and other elements of computing children can develop their own skills and enjoyment of the subject throughout their time at Edennham.

We aim to develop the children’s knowledge of how technology can help children discover and reach out to local, wider and global communities, learn about issues that would be otherwise out of reach and help to be able to solve issues aiding children to be functioning citizens in the modern world.

By teaching in this way, children will continually develop their skills and knowledge and provide them with a solid foundation to move on into the wider world having a solid foundation to prepare them for our ever changing world and have the confidence to become independent and solve problems in a range of settings.

Design and Technology

We recognise the importance for our children to be able to develop their ability to design and make in our ever-changing world. By carefully constructing design projects for each stage of the pupils time at Edenham, they will be able to build on previously learnt skills enabling them to create more complex products. Within every project there a specific set of taught skills are incorporate ensuring children are remembering and understanding more techniques that they can then use their own creativity to take advantage off.

As part of our commitment to ensure children develop a love for their environment, within all projects: materials, resources, their origin, impact is discussed and, in many projects, we use it as an opportunity to make children aware of the world around them – making them more knowledgeable about people, places and issues.

We see it as essential that we use the subject of design and technology as vital tool to prepare our children for the future. Ensuring they can be creative, solve problems independently and be able to be confident in making and rectifying mistakes is a large part of this. Not only these things, but also keeping up to date with changing technology, and introducing children to this at every possible opportunity to ensure they are as, if not more, technologically advanced as their peers.

English

First and foremost, we aim to develop with children a love of learning and vocabulary to inspire and aid them to access a wide variety of opportunities. Teaching phonics consistently across EYFS and Key Stage 1 enables us to maintain high expectations and ensures children progress at a level appropriate to them, giving them a solid foundation of reading. By developing our youngest children’s sentence structure and then moving on to focus on genres when teaching writing children can continually develop their literacy skills and the opportunities to apply these fore different purposes.

Within our reading curriculum we ensure we give children access to a variety of high-quality texts enabling them not only to develop their reading skills, but access a range of cultures, countries and global issues. This also allows children to access our broad curriculum and develop their knowledge in all other areas.

Providing a reading curriculum in this way embeds the importance of reading within children, enabling them to become independent individuals who can discover for themselves in future lives and become philosophical and confident citizens.

Geography

At Edenham CofE Primary School we instil a love of geography by ensuring relatable and real-life examples are at the forefront of our curriculum. By using engaging examples and cast studies linking to other areas of the curriculum children will be build upon their knowledge allowing them to be resourceful geographers.

Within our geography curriculum we ensure we teach children about a range of places both familiar and unfamiliar to our pupils providing them with a sense of awareness of the wider world. Through doing this we also develop their knowledge about geographical issues, and provide children with information to make educated choices about how they can become good global citizens.

By teaching in this way, it will enable the children to develop a sense of wonder and awe, giving them a greater awareness of their own, and others, environments and in turn provide them with the skills to see the world in a philosophical way and communicate confidently about their own views.

History

At Edenham CofE Primary School we instil a love of history by studying a variety of historical periods and characters chronologically, focusing not only on ‘what’ but also ‘how’ and ‘why’. In allowing our pupils to become Historians, they are able to explore, ask and answer questions enabling them to develop their own historical knowledge.

Our History curriculum is delivered in a way that enables children to use their knowledge to answer big questions. In doing this they are able to understand how their environment has come to be the way it is, and how history has affected the wider world.

In making clear links between subjects, study areas and previous learning throughout our history curriculum, children will be able to adopt a philosophical view on the effect historical events and characters have had on our world, and voice their own ideas with confidence.

Maths

We recognise the importance of ensuring our children feel comfortable and confident to discuss mathematical concepts and the ‘mechanics’ of maths as well as being able to apply their knowledge in a range of settings. Due to this our Maths Curriculum has been designed to ensure it firstly develops a love of number before providing children with the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and application.

Within the subject we value the importance of discussion and explanation to deepen children’s understanding but also to develop their communication skills with their peers and adults. The result of this will be children who can ask and answer questions, making links between different areas within maths, and clearly communicate their thoughts and understanding effectively

In teaching maths in this way, children will develop the ability confidently discuss, explain and apply their knowledge developed over time but also providing them with the perseverance and independence to move forward in their educational and future careers.
